Michelle, the fortunate competition winner, and her mother were treated to a captivating evening at The Lights as they attended the opening show of Andover Musical Theatre Company’s rendition of the beloved Disney classic, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.“
Here is the review from Michelle on what was an epic show.
“With thanks to Love Andover for selecting me as their competition winner, on Wednesday 24th May 2023 my Mum and I took a trip to The Lights Andover to watch the opening night of The Hunchback of Notre Dame musical.
“We were warmly greeted by the staff at the lights and kindly shown to our seats. With the theatre only holding 249 it was an intimate performance with every seat offering a perfect view.
“The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a Disney-musical turned stage-musical, which tells the powerful story of the kind-hearted hunchback Quasimodo, the righteous albeit corrupt churchman Frollo and the spirited gypsy girl Esmeralda. The question it asks throughout is simple yet evocative: “what makes a monster and what makes a man?”
“This was a highly impressive piece of musical theatre for an amateur production. The music was lyrical, adding to the characterisation and the plot progression. The singing was excellent, as was the acting. Every song was wonderfully performed with the main cast members giving stunning solos. I want to add a special mention to the gentleman playing Quasimodo, I felt every word he sang and often with a lump in my throat. With the simple but dramatic set, costumes & props I felt transported to the streets of Paris.
“On the whole this was a fabulous rendition of a beloved story packed with humour and drama with a huge emotional punch. I would highly recommend the lights theatre and this musical in particular. Thanks again Love Andover.”
