Following the Government announcement that Hampshire moved into tier 4 from Boxing Day, the Museum will now be CLOSED until further notice, but they do have some alternative suggestions to keep us entertained.
Knit a helicopter
The Army Flying Museum have a target of 1000 mini knitted helicopters to reach for its next community display, this has been inspired by the historic helicopters on display at the museum.
The collection at the museum covers the five main branches of Army Aviation: Royal Engineers (1878 – 1912), The Royal Flying Corps (1912-1918), Air Observation Post Squadrons (1941 – 1957), the Glider Pilot Regiment (1942 – 1957) and the current Army Air Corps (1957- to date).
There are over 40 aircraft that can be seen in the Museum. The collection also contains smaller items such as uniforms, medals and equipment which we use to tell inspiring stories about the people involved in Army aviation.
How you can be involved
They are inviting people to help the Museum to create a mini squadron of knitted and crochet helicopters as part of their ‘Sky High’ art series of installations next year.
They have provided a pattern you can use here or you can use your own.
The team at the Army Flying museum are asking local people to create as many mini helicopters as possible, which will be displayed around the historic helicopters which range from the Lynx, the Scout, a Gazelle and even a Cobra.
The closing date for submitting mini helicopters has now been extended to 25th February 2021
They will also be involving embroidery and sewing enthusiasts to use our stories, collections and aircraft, as inspiration for military inspired fashion jackets, and a graffiti art project.

Museum At Home’ Virtual Outreach
Outreach Officer, Dan Ball, is offering virtual outreach sessions which give groups the opportunity to see some usual objects and find out how Army flying has changed over the past 150 years. These 30 min sessions are ideal for Girl Guides, Scouts, Beavers, etc and are now available to book (using all popular video conferencing methods)
