Time for lift off – Sign up to the Summer Reading Challenge

Rocket to success by signing up at Hampshire’s libraries for the Space Chase – this year’s Summer Reading Challenge theme from the Reading Agency.

The County Council’s Executive Member for Recreation and Heritage, Councillor Seán Woodward, said: “This year’s Summer Reading Challenge promises to be a really exciting one for our young readers as it’s inspired by the 50th anniversary of the moon landing – helping children to tap into their creativity, knowledge and sense of adventure.

“We’re encouraging Hampshire children aged between 4 and 11 to sign up in their local library to read any six books of their choice, and in any format they like, by 15 September. They can choose fiction and non-fiction titles and enjoy them at home, on the move, or whilst away on holiday thanks to a great variety of audiobook, e-book and paperback loan options.

“Good luck to everyone taking part, and we hope you have a fantastic time doing so.”

Children taking part in the free Challenge will join the Reading Agency’s super space family, The Rockets, for a thrilling mission to track down books nabbed by mischievous aliens.

Throughout the challenge, library staff and volunteers will help children of all reading abilities as they progress, and will also be running a range of interactive space-inspired events such as art, crafts and storytelling sessions.

Children will also receive a poster, stickers after each book read, and will be given a medal and an invitation to a Finisher’s Party once they cross the finish line.

Children can sign up for free at their local Hampshire library from Saturday 13 July.
