Portsmouth’s promotion odds cut shorter as excellent run continues

Following Portsmouth’s slow start to the League One season, there won’t have been too many fans holding their breath over their chances of winning promotion to the Championship.

Kenny Jackett’s team won just one of their opening seven matches in League One and kept just one clean sheet in that time, whilst also having just one away league win to their name before November 23.

Having started the season as promotion favourites, Pompey’s opening to the campaign did see them drop as far as 9/2 outsiders with bookmakers to win promotion from League One come May.

But Jackett and his team have been able to overturn their fortunes of late, going on an excellent run of form that has seen them win eight games on the trot in all competitions, winning four in a row in League One.

That positive form has been more than just a purple patch for Pompey, who have also lost just twice in their last sixteen games in League One and have won nine of their last 13, making them the form side of the third tier of English football.

They even have a glamour FA Cup tie to look forward to on the horizon when they host Arsenal in the fifth round at Fratton Park on March 5.

The ongoings at Portsmouth certainly haven’t been overlooked by the bookmakers either, who now make Pompey 11/8 to be promoted from League One by the end of the season, with only Rotherham (4/6) having shorter odds than them. Portsmouth Odds are looking good.

If you wanted to back Portsmouth to go on to win the League One title this season you are able to get a price of 5/1 for them to do so, while promotion via the dreaded playoffs is priced at 17/2.

The 2-0 win over Sunderland will have only helped increase the positivity that is currently surrounding Fratton Park, as will the news of Irish winger Ronan Curtis signing a new three-and-a-half year contract with the club. Curtis is currently Portsmouth’s leading goalscorer this season with 11 to his name.

League One Promotion Odds:

Rotherham United – 4/6

Portsmouth – 11/8

Coventry City – 11/8

Ipswich Town – 5/2

Sunderland – 5/2

Oxford United – 5/2

Peterborough United – 3/1

Wycombe Wanderers – 11/2
