Choir Member’s Daring Wing Walk Inspires Community and Raises Funds for Charity

In a heart-warming display of courage and community spirit, Claire, a member of the Andover Ladies Choir, recently undertook a daring Wing Walk to raise funds for the Stars Appeal.

This brave endeavour came after her mother, who had originally planned the Wing Walk, was diagnosed with a condition that prevented her from participating.

Claire’s father has been battling health issues for some time, necessitating multiple treatments and stays at Salisbury District Hospital. Throughout these challenges, he has consistently received exceptional care from the hospital staff. In January, Claire’s mother celebrated her 80th birthday with a bold declaration: she wished to undertake a Wing Walk in her 80th year to support the Stars Appeal. This charity funds vital resources for the hospital, including High Definition Videoscopes for earlier cancer diagnosis, ‘By Your Side’ sleeper chairs for relatives, specialist cots for newborn babies, and free WiFi for all patients, visitors, and staff.

However, just before she was set to take to the skies, Claire’s mother received a diagnosis that made the Wing Walk impossible. Her disappointment was palpable, but her determination to support the cause remained steadfast. It was then that Claire decided to step in and fulfil her mother’s wish.

Despite her fear, Claire committed to the Wing Walk, driven by her desire to honour her parents and support the many families who benefit from the Stars Appeal’s fundraising efforts. Reflecting on the experience, Claire described it as “frightening and exhilarating in equal measure,” noting the turbulence and initial fear, but also the sense of relaxation that came towards the end of the flight. She humorously added that her limbs felt like lead weights during the flight and compared the post-flight sensation to that of having had a bit too much to drink.

Claire’s bravery has not only raised funds but also raised spirits, demonstrating the power of community and the extraordinary lengths to which individuals will go to support a worthy cause. Her efforts have been applauded by her choir, who consider her actions splendid and inspiring.

The community is encouraged to contribute what they can to the Stars Appeal, understanding that every pound donated will aid in the continuation of the essential services and improvements that the charity supports.

Claire has smashed her original target of £500 and is currently at time of writing on £2110. You can find out more and donate here.
