Hampshire County Council is encouraging young people to check out its comprehensive set of careers advice and information, all available online.
It’s National Careers Week this week (1-5 March) – and Hampshire County Council is encouraging young people to check out its comprehensive set of careers advice and information, all available online. Built in response to Covid-19 and the introduction of remote schooling, Hampshire Futures’ Digital Careers Resources are available to all and contain a wealth of support, information and signposts to experts who can help young people find the right course, apprenticeship, or job.
Councillor Roz Chadd, Executive Member for Education and Skills, commented: “Hampshire Futures’ Careers Service each year supports thousands of school and college students to take their first steps on a career path through apprenticeships or higher education, but the impact of the pandemic has seen an unexpected benefit – in that all our professional careers advisers have worked to pool their knowledge and experience to create this incredible free 24/7 careers hub, backed up with expert advice by telephone, email or face to face through video chat.
“I am very excited to report that we’ve seen even higher levels of engagement with students in 2020 – as well as 40,000 visitors to the website since its launch in May, and much of that is because students, teachers, parents and carers can browse the content at leisure from their own device. The website has enabled the careers team to carry out practical remote activities with young people, and the young people themselves have been able to take responsibility for their own research into their career pathway with quality assured resources.”
The Digital Careers Resources are available on the Hampshire Futures website. Content covers all aspects of careers, further and higher education and related issues such as personal finance and wellbeing. It includes a suite of ‘Ted-Ed’ interactive videos created by Hampshire careers advisers, covering a whole range of careers, as well as useful tips including preparing for university, alternatives to face-to-face work experience, and choosing an apprenticeship.
There are also tailored resources for professionals, care leavers and students with special education needs.
Even with the imminent return to face-to-face education, this valuable web resource will continue to be added to, updated and improved.
Additions and special online events funded or provided by Hampshire Futures taking place during Careers Week include:
• Opening of registration for the Virtual Careers and Apprenticeship Show, dedicated to opportunities and options for young people in our local region;
• Update of Flying Start Hampshire – created with the Southern Universities Network to help and support Year 11 students as they prepare for their next steps;
• Online launch of Your Future, Your Choice, an interactive booklet created by the Hampshire Careers Partnership to support Year 13 students with their transition from college or sixth form.
