The Abbotts Mitre at Chilbolton was saved from closure last month when Enterprise Inns and Tom, the landlord, reached a temporary agreement to keep the pub open on a monthly basis in the hope that a new tenant can be found.
Andrew Gardner, the Regional Manager for Enterprise Inns, said:
“Just to confirm that the TAW (Tenancy At Will) agreement was signed today (Monday 10th June) to enable Tom’s continued occupation of the pub.
Thanks to Tom for his support and loyalty towards the villagers and the pub, and we would encourage people to use it. However we need to stress that the agreement is temporary and that Enterprise continues to look for a long term Publican.”
The Abbotts Mitre has made the following statement via the “Save Our Pub” website:
“As we all now know, Tom has signed a short term agreement in order to keep the pub running as a going concern.
This means that the prospect of closure has been averted in the short term, but now is the opportunity to revitalise the part that the pub plays in the life of the village such that it can form a sustainable service moving forward.
This means that the pub needs to enjoy not only the custom of the immediate local clientele, but must also look wider to draw people from the surrounding area. Consequently, the “Save Our Pub” activities need to refocus around the theme of “Promote Our Pub” to give the pub the best opportunity of success.
To this end Tom is inviting ideas for promotion of the pub in order to ensure that it is attractive to an incoming leassee. He is ready and willing to support promotional activities, but in practical terms this means the responsibility of creating opportunities for building the reputation of the pub fall to those in the local area.”
