With GCSE exams starting this week Harrow Way had an innovative approach to ensuring their Year 11 students stay focused and motivated.
Astronaut Tim Peake sent a video message wishing the students good luck in their forthcoming exams, alongside video messages of support and words of advice from staff. A special and rather emotional surprise for students were the unexpected letters of support from parents and teachers which were also given out during the assembly designed to encourage the students over the GCSE finishing line.
Lyndsey Walker, Head of Year 11 explains why the school goes the extra mile for their Year 11s “The students have all worked so hard and the end is in sight – the goal they have been focusing on for the last five years.
“It was an emotional moment when they opened their surprise letters from parents and teachers but it was also a very significant moment as we wanted the students to realise how supported they are and proud of them we all are. There were lots of happy tears and a wonderful atmosphere in the room.”
The teachers at Harrow Way also had one final card to play in the form of Jim Roberson, a former American football player, now motivational coach. Jim has worked with the school for a number of years and his unique way has always proved a winning formula in getting Year 11s game ready for their exams and beyond.
In his engaging style Jim led a session on how students could train their brains and be disciplined with their revision so they remain focused during these final weeks. Recognising that students need to maintain a committed and focused approach even when they’ve left Harrow Way, Jim also got students looking at setting longer term goals and future aspirations – both personally and professionally.”
Ms Walker concludes “I have been the head of this cohort of students for the last four years and they have genuinely been a pleasure to lead. The students have been committed to both their studies and school life and I have no doubt they will excel during their GCSE exams and go on to do well with their chosen pathways following their time here.”
