Photographs by Andover College Art student, Jess Ngombe have been selected for the national exhibition, Shine for Shelter.

Set in the heart of Brighton, the exhibition provides a platform for debuting artists to display their work as well as raising money for charity.

Born and raised in Botswana until her early teens, Jess explains how issues of racism and equality are often revealed in her urban portraits, including those exhibited recently. Jess said: “My work is focused on issues surrounding the Black Lives Matter movement, exploring both working class and city life through capturing architecture and human form.

“I photograph the majority of my content in London, a city I love and hope to attend university in following my studies at Andover College.”

Jess attributes the confidence to put herself forward for the exhibition and other industry opportunities to the open-plan, shared studios at the College, which she describes as a great confidence booster.

Jess adds, “I can explore new processes, be inspired by the work of my peers and through trial and error, learn what creative outlets I’m particularly interested in such as photography and 3D design. The support and encouragement from lecturers is also fantastic so I feel able to actively pursue external prospects with their expert guidance”.

The Shine for Shelter exhibition is in aid of Shelterbox, a charity who create aid boxes for families affected by natural disasters around the world.
