Vigo School Choir confirmed for Armed Forces Day

Vigo School Choir Andover Armed Forces Day 2018

Local primary school Vigo School have confirmed their attendance at this year’s event in Vigo Park.

School children from the school which opened in September 2016 will be on stage twice during the event which celebrates the work of our Armed Forces.

The young singers were a hit at last year’s event, with teacher Mrs Weymouth conducting the choir. Today she told local radio station 95.9FM Andover Radio that the young people are “really excited” about this year’s event, “They are really looking forward to being on the big stage again. It’s a great way to build their confidence and they really enjoy the experience”.

The children from Vigo School are aged 7 to 11 and they use Makaton (sign language) to communicate lyrics within the songs.

Mrs Weymouth adds that their choir is much in demand, “At Christmas we have a very busy time, the school’s children travel all around the area, singing for people in residential homes. Previously we have performed at The Arbory, Rosthsay Grange; basically most of the area’s residential homes.”

Andover town mayor Cllr Richard Rowles is the chair of this year’s Andover Armed Forces Day and is pleased that Vigo School Choir are participating again saying, “Their use of sign language in their songs is very important.

“I am making headway with local charities to encourage and support local organisations into learning sign language. I’d really to make Andover the next ‘Makaton-friendly’ town in the UK.”

This year’s Armed Forces Day has confirmed live music, courtesy of renowned singer-songwriter Alex Krupa, arena displays from The Paladins medieval reenactment team and the incredible Rockets Children’s Motorcycle Display Team.

Military vehicles and shows will be scattered across the park, with the emphasis on teaching people about the work of our serving military personnel.

This year’s event is being supported through grant funding from Andover town council, Hampshire County Council and a large range local businesses including David Mellor Family Jewellers, Oaktree Accountants, Bourne Valley Kitchens and International Furniture.

It is important that we prepare the children of Vigo Primary School to live well in our society and to deal with the challenges that the modern world presents.
