Police in Andover are appealing for witnesses and information after a suspicious incident where an 85-year-old woman’s purse was stolen from her home in Houghton, near Stockbridge.

Between 9am and 10.10am on Friday, May 3, an 85-year-old woman was approached by an unknown man who said there was an infestation of rats in her garden and that he could get rid of them.

The woman agreed and went inside her house to get money to pay the man. After she paid him, he called her into the garden to check his work and then left. The victim then realised that her purse was missing. The purse contained about £150.

The man is described as white, aged about 35 and about 5ft 4ins tall. He had dark-brown neat hair and blue eyes.

PC Raymond Cox said: “Have you seen anyone matching this description in the area?

“This is a despicable crime against an elderly lady. Please contact me if you have any information.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact PC Cox at Andover Police Station on 101 or call the charity Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111
