International peace Day in Andover

On Monday 22 September, Andover Trees accepted the UNs invitation to commemorate International Day of Peace through education and public awareness.

Dr Jane Goodall is a UN ambassador and world-leading primatologist who runs the global youth organisation, Roots and Shoots.

This year, the theme is ‘Shaping Peace Together’.

In these difficult times of physical distancing, this International Day of Peace will be dedicated to fostering dialogue and collecting ideas. The world will be invited to unite and share thoughts on how to weather this storm, heal our planet and change it for the better. Even though we may not be able to stand next to each other, we can still dream together.”

As a mark of respect for people all over the world, they planted a single tree and invited the community to hang their peace doves and messages of peace on the hazel ring arches in Harmony Woods. The youth of Andover were represented by 2 ATU youth ambassadors from Winton Community Academy, who commemorated the day with us by hanging doves and messages from their fellow students, planting the tree and having a peace walk through the woods.

They now invite thoughts from the local community as to how they may commemorate lives lost and lives changed as a result of the pandemic by further tree plantings across the winter. Please get in touch via email – volunteers@andovertrees.org.uk
