Councillors offer helping hand to housing hopefuls

Councillor Michael James of Andover Town Council has stepped up to offer assistance to families trying to bid for housing in Andover.

He has started working with vulnerable families who are struggling with the applications and bidding process for getting housed within the Andover area.

Tom & Kathleen Barlass and their children are one such family.

Tom, who served as a Trooper with the Kings Royal Hussars for five years, was demobbed under medical grounds earlier this year. Tom, Kathleen and their children are currently living in MOD property in Tidworth, but are required to move out as Tom is no longer a serving member of the army.

They have been applying for housing via Hampshire Home Choice for about a year as Kathleen has family that live in Andover. They are currently under a Repossession Order from the MOD, and struggling to find suitable accommodation for them and their 4 children.

Test Valley Borough Council Housing Department are working with them and have been liaising with the MOD to try and resolve the current situation. However, they are awaiting an eviction notice to enable them to act quickly. Tom & Kathleen are due in court this month and should be receiving this notice then.

The situation has led to a deterioration of family health as well as a lot of stress. Tom & Kathleen had found very little support to help them with this until Cllr James stepped up and offered to work with them to resolve this matter.

Kathleen said “It’s been a long time waiting for action to be taken. Thanks to Cllr James & TVBC things are starting to go the right way”

Cllr Michael James said “It’s good to see councillors from different local councils working together to help all those in vulnerable situations”

Cllr Iris Andersen of TVBC has also been working hard to provide support and advice to the homeless of Andover.
