The Hampshire community have pulled together to raise money for hospitals including Andover’s War Memorial Hospital.
Hospitals in Andover, Basingstoke and Winchester will benefit from the “Dig Deep” Campaign which has raised £683,908 in just 11 days.
The Hampshire Medical Fund has been raising money to buy equipment for Winchester, Basingstoke and Andover Hospitals since it was launched by the late Earl of Carnarvon in 1981. This is normally kit outside their NHS budgets and it enables these hospitals to perform at an enhanced level for all the communities which they serve.
Given the current crisis they have launched the ‘Dig Deep’ campaign and the community has shown the most astonishing support with literally hundreds of donations coming in from £5 to much more.
As a direct result of each and every one of these donations, The Hampshire Medical Fund have made these funds immediately available to our local hospitals meaning that they have been able to order several pieces of equipment which are absolutely key to their battle against COVID – 19.
These will be used by frontline staff working on the most critically ill patients coming into Basingstoke, Winchester and Andover Hospitals.
As Tim Nedas, Consultant Urologist MB BS FRCS at Hampshire Hospitals Foundation Trust explained:
“The situation in Hampshire Hospitals (and throughout the UK) is constantly evolving; at the time of writing we have more seriously ill patients than our neighbouring organisations and are working extremely hard to prepare for more. The ability to fund equipment today and have it here expediently is crucial. There is little doubt that we are going to need these resources to save lives. This scenario may last some time, the sooner we can scale up for our response the better” –
The hospitals’ needs are shifting on a daily basis and despite this incredible start there is still a list of equipment that they are desperate to purchase as soon as possible:-
1 x MRI Monitoring System for Cardiology and Critical Care – allows ‘stress’ MRI scans to be performed with continual monitoring for critical Cardiac cases. This is not currently possible in Basingstoke, Winchester or Andover hospitals. £41,424.
1 x Transthoracic Echo machine for Acute Cardiology Unit – This machine would allow Andover Hospital to perform cardiac echo scans on Covid-19 patients rather than transfer them to Basingstoke or Winchester hospitals, as the Andover hospital machine has recently broken. £37,000.
4 x Better BiPap equipment for Emergency Patients – This equipment provides lifesaving treatment to patients suffering from respiratory failure. £64,440 (for four).
1 x Ultrasound and Echocardiography Machine for Intensive Care – This machine will play a big part in the evolving COVID19 situation as clinicians have to split stock between infected and non-infected patients. £20,750.
1 x ORSIM Bronchoscopy Simulator for Intensive Care & Anaesthesia – This equipment allows training on negotiating airways in real life scenarios, which will be particularly pertinent with retired clinicians returning to the front-line at this time. £18,000.
We would like to have a discretionary fund to support our frontline Medical Staff as required in consultation with the CEO and CFO of our NHS Trust as they work through these unprecedented times.
Peter Walsh, Head of Fundraising for the Hampshire Medical Fund expressed his gratitude to those who have given so generously:
“We have been truly humbled by your response to this campaign and give our heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you for digging so deep, particularly at this time when huge financial uncertainty is one of the many challenges that we are all facing. Please be assured that you are making a very real difference to our Hampshire Hospitals.”
