Local elections: Vote counting started

Polls closed last night for all local elections.

For many this meant completing a complicated – and we feel – desperately inefficient way of voting on four different coloured slips. All slips were to be posted in the same ballot box.

Some residents in Andover were expected to vote for TOWN COUNCIL, BOROUGH COUNCIL, COUNTY COUNCIL and POLICE COMMISSONER.

Each vote was on a separate ballot paper, but all posted into the same ballot box. These would then be individually separated then verified before the count of votes can begin.

A turnout of 35% yesterday was no doubt higher than many expected.

The verification process at Andover Leisure Centre has been completed. Now that these spoilt papers etc have been removed the count has begun. This means the results for the three local authorities in Andover (town, borough and county) may be returned today.

The count of votes for Hampshire County Council will start first. Borough and Town will follow.

The Police Commissioner count will happen on Monday (10th May 2021).

A list of candidates has been published in Andover’s local newspaper, the Love Andover Observer.
