If you receive a call from someone saying they are from Microsoft and need to access your computer just hang up – it is most likely a scam.

Andover resident Gary Lucas told us that a relative had received a call from someone pretending to be from Microsoft. Thankfully he was aware of the scam and put the phone down on them.

They will often call from overseas destinations and suggest you have an issue with your computer or licensing. They will then try and get you to go to a website and download som software. This will usually be what is called malware and leave your computer open to hackers.

The scam has been covered in the national press as well – The Telegraph covered it last month – and Microsoft have issued advice on what to do if your receive a call.
