Poet's Corner

STORY OF A RIVER BY MAISY

I dashed past boulders.

Time went as quick as a blink,

Maybe even quicker.

Like a dripping tap,

My water grew bigger and bigger,

Making my sinkhole fuller and fuller,

Never ending.

Then I was out of the mountains,

Flooding through green.

I was still going past boulders

For everyone to see.

Going over, under, round and forward,

But never backward.

I was still very thin,

It was hard to fit in.

Bugs covered my skin

To drink me.

I was getting more worn out,

Meandering for ever.

Seen the stars a million times.

I was an athlete.

Trees covered me like a blanket.

But the blanket left me when it was winter.

I could see all sorts of creatures,

Deer, sheep,cows,

It never ended.

I never got to sleep, the fish never stopped chatting.

Kingfishers sang me to sleep,

Damsel flies tickled my skin.

No more fish…

No more fish?

People urgently stabbed me,

Trying to find the fish.

They pulled out more and more,

Less and less for me,

It never ended.

What on earth is this clear stuff?

It sank into me, It made me feel sick,

It wasn’t funny.

I used to rush past boulders,

But now I am clogged with you rubbish.

It’s not fair!

I haven’t done anything wrong!

Have I?

My life is over.

Listen to what I have to say,

Don’t pollute my other friends

Or you will have a price to pay!

About the author

Dan Hooks

Hi there my name is Dan Hooks and I am a poet.

My poetry has many diverse themes from madness to the mundane, from fantasy and fable to philosophical and the darkness of reality (whatever that is).

I have been writing since I was 18 and have inspired other artists such as Benjamin Heine who created an piece of art work called”filled with fire” from my poem called “Freedom”. That poem was inspired from a quote from Nelson Mandela saying “we are free to be free”. Writing I find is a collaborative process.

I have also written other poems which have been used in language courses in America, Canada and Australia. One of which is called “poem on identity” and the other one is “Antithesis”.

I have a soundcloud account in which I post poems to music and my spoken word pieces. I find spreading my work on various social media platforms really useful for presenting my work.

I am also fond of travelling and have climbed Mount Fuji in Japan visited Finland skied in both USA in keystone Colorado and Whistler in Canada. I find perspective can be found in travelling to other countries and it also helps you appreciate other cultures as well your own.
