Sprat and Winkle Line Photography Exhibition at Andover Museum

Visitors to the Andover Museum and the Museum of the Iron Age can enjoy a set of photographs by local photographer George Gammer in the gallery from Fri 2 July – Sun 1 Aug 2021. The photographs, taken in 2019, are of a railway line with the nickname of ‘Sprat and Winkle’ that used to run along the valley of the River Test from Southampton to Andover. The line was closed as part of the Beeching cuts in 1967. In its heyday it was a very picturesque route – now it is in a state of picturesque decay.

The exhibition is part of the Test Valley Borough of Culture 2020 events & exhibitions programme, but due to lockdown and museum closures in 2020, the TV Borough of Culture has been extended in 2021 so that the wonderful art and culture can be enjoyed by all our visitors from near and far. Please see https://testvalley2020.org/ for information about more Test Valley Borough of Culture events & exhibitions in the area.

Community Manager of Andover Museum Louise Mackay says ‘It’s great to be able to finally share these wonderful photographs of the Sprat and Winkle line by George Gammer at our Hampshire Cultural Trust’s gallery – Andover Museum. This once busy railway line is a huge part of Andover’s history and after many years nature has reclaimed it. Much of the route between Chilbolton and Kimbridge is now used by the Test Way long-distance footpath, and is also part of the Sustrans National Cycle Network.”
