Work to install the brand-new play area at Vigo Park has hit an unexpected setback after contractors uncovered buried white asbestos while preparing the foundations.

The material – remnants of historic building work – was found buried and completely sealed beneath soil and surfacing from the previous play park. Officials have confirmed that it posed no risk to park users prior to discovery, but it must now be safely removed by a specialist contractor before work can continue.
The affected area has been securely fenced off, and arrangements are being made to bring in qualified professionals to remove the asbestos and inspect the rest of the site. This step will help ensure any further materials are dealt with swiftly, avoiding more delays down the line.
A spokesperson said:
“This was an unforeseen issue, but we’re really sorry for the delay this will cause. Once the site is cleared, our park contractor will be working at pace to make up for lost time. Our goal remains to get the new playground open in time for the summer holidays, so children can enjoy it as soon as possible.”
Further updates will be shared once the specialist team is confirmed and a revised timeline is available.
