Stannah Marks 200 Years of UK Railways with Network Rail Partnership

As the UK rail industry celebrates an incredible 200 years since the launch of the world’s first public steam railway, Andover-based lift specialists Stannah are proudly marking the milestone with their long-standing partner, Network Rail.

From the opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825 to today’s complex network of over 1.6 billion journeys annually, the UK’s railways have revolutionised transport. And for Stannah, helping people move easily through stations has become a vital part of that journey.

With a strong heritage rooted in engineering excellence dating back over 150 years, Stannah now maintains more than 1,500 lifts and escalators across the UK rail network, helping millions of passengers travel safely and comfortably every day.

And Stannah’s rail roots go even deeper. Founder Joseph Stannah was himself an innovator during the Industrial Revolution, filing patents to improve locomotive parts and contribute to the early railway boom. His legacy of innovation and social impact continues in Stannah’s mission today.

Archie Hungwe, Chief Operating Officer at Stannah, said:

“Stannah’s work for Network Rail aligns perfectly with the values of inclusion and safety that underpin the railway sector.

“Our collaborative efforts to improve lift equipment performance are testament to our commitment to enhancing the travel experience for all passengers, whatever their mobility needs.”

As part of Network Rail’s vision for step-free access at all 554 stations, Stannah plays a vital role in providing efficient, reliable lift systems to ensure stations are welcoming and accessible for everyone.

“Celebrating 200 years of railway history is a momentous occasion for the rail industry,” added Archie. “We’re proud to play our part in making sure that legacy includes freedom of movement for all.”

With its headquarters in Andover, Stannah remains at the forefront of British engineering – combining a proud history with a modern mission to make buildings, stations, and public spaces easier to access for everyone.
