The A303 westbound remains closed until further notice following a serious multi-vehicle collision.
The incident took place at around 12:30pm on Saturday, 11 April, between the A342 at Andover and the A338 near Shipton Bellinger. Emergency services, including police, fire crews and air ambulances, attended the scene, forcing an initial closure in both directions to allow access.
The eastbound carriageway reopened at approximately 3:45pm. However, the westbound side has remained shut, with no estimated time for reopening.
National Highways confirmed that the collision led to a significant spillage of fuel and oil, which caused damage to the road surface. As a result, resurfacing works are required before the route can safely reopen.
Motorists caught within the closure were eventually released using a “rearward relief” system. Vehicles were turned around in small groups and escorted against the flow of traffic to the junction at Grateley, allowing drivers to rejoin the A303 at Cholderton.
Drivers reported being stuck in queues for up to six hours, with the incident leading to more than eight hours overall.
Road users are being advised to seek alternative routes while the westbound carriageway remains closed.
