Andover Soapbox Derby Set to Thrill This Sunday

One of Andover’s most thrilling and cherished community events is ready to roll — and this year’s Soapbox Derby promises more excitement, more creativity, and more community buzz than ever before.

Taking place on Sunday, May 25, the annual event will once again turn Hopkinson Way into a lively racetrack packed with cheering crowds, colourful karts, and fast-paced fun. The road will be closed off from 12pm to 5pm, with the racing action kicking off at 1pm.

Organised by Andover Community Events, who were recently recognised as the Best Community Focused Events Non-Profit in South East England, the derby has grown into one of the town’s most anticipated days out — and this year’s edition is shaping up to be the biggest yet.

22 teams are lined up to race their homemade soapbox carts down the 400-metre course, each getting two attempts to clock their best time. As well as prizes for the fastest runs, judges will be looking out for flair, effort and entertainment value, with extra awards for Judges’ Choice and People’s Choice, the latter decided by a live Facebook vote during the event.

“This is a day where everyone can come together and just have fun,” said Kevin Rush from Andover Community Events. “It’s incredible to see how much effort teams put into their soapboxes, and the community support is always amazing. Best of all, we’re raising money for Koala, a local charity doing incredible work. That’s what this is all about — fun with a purpose.”

The event is completely free to attend, with VIP parking (just 50 metres from the start line) and disabled parking available for £10 if booked in advance.

Andover Radio favourites Ben Tuffin and Dave Allon will be on the mic throughout the day, offering live commentary, interviews with teams, and plenty of laughs along the way.

As well as the action on the track, visitors can enjoy a full afternoon of entertainment with market stalls, family-friendly activities, and delicious food and drink options to keep energy levels high.

With the first races starting at 1pm and the grand prize-giving ceremony wrapping things up around 5:30pm, it’s the perfect day out for all ages.

Whether you’re cheering from the sidelines or racing down the hill, the Andover Soapbox Derby is a brilliant celebration of local talent, teamwork and community spirit.
