Battery Fires on the Rise – Fire Service Urges Andover Shoppers to Buy Safe Electrical Gifts This Christmas

From April 2024 to March 2025, firefighters recorded 156 battery-related fires across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight – up 64 on the previous year, and 80 more than the year before that. These incidents include fires caused by e-scooters, e-bikes, phones, tablets and other everyday rechargeable devices.

Recent weeks have seen several significant incidents across the region, including scooter and e-bike battery fires that caused serious damage to homes. Although the latest figures are county-wide, firefighters warn the risk applies everywhere – including Andover.

Why lithium-ion batteries pose a risk

Lithium-ion batteries are found in:

  • E-scooters and e-bikes
  • Laptops and tablets
  • Mobile phones
  • Power banks and rechargeable toys
  • Electric household gadgets

These batteries can fail or overheat if:

  • Bought from unregulated or cheap online sellers
  • Used with non-compatible or counterfeit chargers
  • Overcharged or left charging overnight
  • Stored in hot, cold or damp conditions
  • Damaged, dropped or incorrectly disposed of

A single battery failure can lead to explosive ignition and fast-spreading fire.

What the Fire Service is asking Andover residents to do

HIWFRS Prevention Manager Tracey Webb said the run-up to Christmas is a key time for people buying electrical gifts – and also a peak period for dangerous, unregulated imports.

“When buying electrical products such as phones, tablets, e-scooters and other battery-powered devices, please buy only from reputable retailers and make sure they meet UK safety standards.

“Use the charger your product came with, don’t overload sockets, and never leave devices plugged in overnight or unattended.”

Fire-safe gift buying – what to look for

Before buying a gadget or battery-powered gift, check for:

  • UKCA or CE certification marks
  • A reputable UK-based retailer or brand
  • A charger designed specifically for the device
  • Clear instructions and labelling

After purchase:

  • Register the product online so you can be alerted to recalls
  • Charge devices on a hard, flat surface
  • Never charge while sleeping or when out of the house
  • Keep batteries away from heat sources or direct sunlight
  • Safely dispose of old or damaged batteries at recycling centres — never in household bins
