British Series of shows on the way, marking VE Day 80 in Andover

As the country marks the 80th anniversary of VE Day and the end of the Second World War this year, The Lights in Andover has put together a special mini season of shows that all have elements of significant moments across the past 80 years, recognition of our servicemen and women and ultimately, a celebration of this historic event.

Kicking off the season is Neil Sands “Land of Hope and Glory” show, this patriotic and nostalgic afternoon is filled with memorable songs with Neil taking you on a journey from old time sing-alongs to ever popular favourites, as well as a special section with songs from Last Night of The Proms. The Government has announced four days of nationwide celebrations. The Lights will be holding this event to start the celebrations together. There is also a pre-show lunch for those who have a ticket for the show with scones, sandwiches and tea aplenty!

Also part of the series this year in September, Codebreakers: The Story of Enigma presented by Dr Mark Baldwin. A talk about the story of the second World War’s Allied Codebreakers, who deciphered a vast number of German secret messages and used the intelligence gained to hasten Allied victory. The show is followed by an opportunity for questions, and then a hands-on demonstration of one of the very few surviving Enigma machines.

Finally, the venue brings a brand-new theatre show Mettle – the Atlantic convoys of World War Two to Andover. Nicholas Collett tells the story of his father’s service during the Atlantic Convoys of World War Two. A true odyssey, that takes us from Sheffield to Liverpool to Nova Scotia, Boston to West Africa and home again, amidst the constant threat of U-Boat attack and treacherous weather. This show is a tribute to those who served, those who were lost – and those who lived to tell their story.
