From 6am on Thursday, April 17, until 12:01am on Tuesday, April 22, over 1,100 miles of roadworks have been removed across England, ensuring that 97.5% of major roads are free from roadworks during the Easter break.

The A303, a key route for holidaymakers heading to the South West, often experiences heavy traffic during bank holidays. The removal of roadworks near Andover is expected to alleviate congestion and improve travel times for both local residents and visitors.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander stated:

“We are tackling the real problems that drivers face by lifting miles of roadworks and cracking down on disruptive streetworks to make journeys to see loved ones as smooth as possible.”

In addition to lifting roadworks, the government has allocated £1.6 billion to local councils for pothole repairs, aiming to fill approximately 7 million potholes nationwide. This initiative is expected to save drivers up to £500 annually in vehicle repair costs and fuel expenses.

National Highways is also promoting its ‘TRIP’ campaign—Top-up, Rest, Inspect, Prepare—to encourage drivers to check their vehicles before setting off, reducing the risk of breakdowns and ensuring safer journeys.
