Residents in Andover are being warned to stay alert after a false widow spider was spotted in Anna Fields this week.

The sighting comes as the species reaches its peak activity in late summer. Experts say August through autumn is when the spiders are most likely to be seen, as males wander in search of mates and sometimes enter homes.
False widows are often confused with black widows, but they are less dangerous. Bites are rare and usually no worse than a wasp sting, although some people may experience swelling or mild illness.
The spiders can be recognised by their dark, round bodies with cream markings and are often found in sheds, garages, and around window frames.
Local pest control specialists advise residents not to panic if they see one. Instead, carefully remove it using a glass and card, or leave it undisturbed if it is outside.
With reports increasing across Hampshire, the Anna Fields sighting is a reminder that false widows are now part of Andover’s local wildlife
