Hampshire Hospitals Launches Free Lung Cancer Screening Programme

Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has launched a Lung Cancer Screening Programme aimed at detecting lung cancer at its earliest, most treatable stages. This new initiative could be a lifesaver for many in the community, offering quick and simple screenings to help catch the disease before symptoms appear.

Who Will Be Invited?

Over the coming months, GPs will be writing to individuals aged 55 to 74 who have ever smoked, inviting them to participate in the screening. Invitations will be sent by post, and letters will include details about the process and how to get in touch with healthcare professionals if you have any questions.

How Does the Screening Work?

The screening process is simple and involves two key steps:

Initial Phone Call:

Participants will first have a telephone consultation with a healthcare professional. This conversation will focus on breathing, lung health, lifestyle, and family history.

CT Scan (If Needed):

If the initial assessment identifies a potential risk, participants will be referred for a low-dose, painless CT scan. The scans will be conducted at a mobile scanning unit parked in a convenient location, ensuring easy access for everyone involved.

Why Early Detection Matters

Spotting signs of lung cancer early means treatment can be simpler and more effective. Data from the screening programme shows that 80% of lung cancers found through this method are at stage 1 or stage 2, compared to just 30% without early screening. This can make a huge difference in treatment outcomes and survival rates.

For many people, no serious problems are found, but the peace of mind that comes from getting checked is invaluable.

Partnerships and Support

The Lung Cancer Screening Programme is delivered in partnership with Medispace and Nelson+, ensuring high-quality care and support throughout the process.

How to Get Involved

Keep an eye out for your invitation letter in the post. It will contain all the details you need about the screening and how to contact the healthcare team with any queries.
