Residents across Hampshire and the Solent area are being urged to give their views on the future of local government before the public survey closes on Sunday 17 August 2025.

The Government is looking to simplify council structures nationwide by creating fewer, all‑purpose unitary authorities that deliver all local services. Councils must submit their proposals this autumn, after which the Government will consult the public before making a final decision.
Hampshire County Council and East Hampshire District Council are proposing four new councils – three covering the mainland and one for the Isle of Wight. The aim is to bring services closer to communities, reflect how people live and work today, and protect local identities with strong leadership.
Councillor Nick Adams‑King, Leader of Hampshire County Council, said:
“The Government has made it clear that change is coming, but we believe it should be shaped by the people who live and work here – not imposed by those who don’t know our area.
This is your chance to help shape a simpler, stronger and more secure future for local government.”
Councillor Richard Millard, Leader of East Hampshire District Council, added:
“We have a real opportunity to design a system that delivers better value, easier access, and high‑quality public services – but we need to hear your views.”
Feedback from the survey will help finalise the proposal, which will be submitted to central Government in September.
Residents can take part in the survey until Sunday 17 August 2025 at www.hants.gov.uk/lgr.
