Kick Out The Stigma Secures Spot at Inaugural Mental Health World Cup

Andover-based football community group Kick Out The Stigma (KOTS) has won a place at the first-ever Mental Health World Cup, set to take place at Watford FC’s Vicarage Road stadium. The tournament, created in partnership with WD18, will bring together 32 teams for a landmark event promoting mental health awareness through the power of football.

Initially capped at 16 teams, demand for places was so high that organisers doubled the number of spots. However, with teams now sold out, organisers are encouraging supporters to fill the stadium. Tickets are available for £10 in advance or £15 on the door, with children under 16 admitted free with a paying adult.

KOTS secured their place in the tournament after founder Michael Ford submitted a winning story detailing the group’s journey and impact on the community. What started with just a handful of participants has now grown to support 185 men and 48 women, using football as a means to improve mental health and well-being.

Reflecting on the team’s success, Ford said: “Actually incredible how it’s growing and now being given the opportunity to play in this tournament is just unreal.”

The Mental Health World Cup aims to highlight the importance of mental health through sport, providing an inclusive and supportive environment for those involved. With KOTS now set to take part in this pioneering event, the group’s story is a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives in tackling mental health challenges.
