Man Jailed and Banned from Andover Pubs and Shops Following Series of Offences

A man has been jailed for 18 weeks and handed a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) after assaulting police officers and committing multiple offences across Andover.

Gary Lee Ellis, of The Hexagon in Andover, appeared at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court on Monday 19 May, where he pleaded guilty to assaulting two police officers during an attempted arrest on 24 October 2024. During the incident, Ellis pushed one officer, causing a bump to her head and scratches to her hands. A second officer received cuts and bruises.

Ellis also admitted to the following separate offences:

  • Common assault against a member of the public on 3 September 2024 on Bridge Street.
  • Causing over £1,000 in damage to The White Hart Hotel by pulling a water pipe from a wall on 26 December.
  • Throwing plant pots into the road outside The Anton Arms on 14 February, causing further damage.
  • Breaking a £2,000 glass panel in a communal area of The Hexagon on 11 February.

In addition to his jail sentence, Ellis has been issued with a Criminal Behaviour Order lasting three years, which places strict restrictions on his movements.

Under the CBO, Ellis must not:

  • Enter any licensed Public House in Test Valley.
  • Enter or behave in an anti-social manner at the following locations:
    • Asda, Anton Mill Road
    • Tesco, River Way
    • The White Hart Hotel
    • The Anton Arms

If he breaches the terms of this order, Ellis may face further prosecution.

Sergeant Rob Perry, of the Test Valley Priority Crime Team, said:

“We know that Gary Ellis’ behaviour has had significant impacts on our local businesses and residents.
Our officers take all reports seriously, and I hope this reassures people that we do all we can to put prolific offenders before the courts.”

The order is part of ongoing efforts by local police to protect residents, support businesses, and tackle persistent anti-social behaviour across Andover.
