New Andover Shop Brings American-Style Card Collecting to Town

Andover has welcomed a unique new addition to its independent business scene with the opening of Red Label Cards – the town’s first-ever sports card shop.

Tucked away at Unit 209 of The Commercial Centre in Picket Piece, Red Label Cards is more than just a retail space. It’s a hobby lounge and a passion project, created by local resident Aaron Mapplebeck, who has turned a personal journey into a thriving, community-driven venture.

Sports card collecting is huge in America – shops are as common there as newsagents are here,” said Aaron. “It’s now starting to take off rapidly in the UK too, and I’m proud to bring something completely new to Andover.”

The shop specialises in PSA graded cards – officially authenticated and professionally valued trading cards based on their rarity and condition – as well as sealed hobby boxes imported from the U.S. These boxes, often unavailable on the high street, are usually only found online or at specialist conventions.

But for Aaron, the mission is about more than just commerce. “This shop means more to me than business – it’s about family, recovery, and sharing something special with others,” he said.

Red Label Cards was born during a difficult period in Aaron’s life. While undergoing treatment for illness, his partner and carer Bex brought over a box of old football cards for his then four-year-old son. That simple gesture became a turning point.

“Sorting through the cards with my son became an escape,” Aaron explained. “We found cards with pieces of shirts embedded in them, rare inserts – the whole depth of the hobby really amazed us. It brought us together and eventually led to this shop. my boy is seven now and already dreams of running his own Pokémon shop.”

Now open from Tuesday to Saturday (10am–2pm) or by appointment, Red Label Cards also hosts monthly trade nights – welcoming collectors to connect, trade, and open packs in a relaxed and friendly setting. The first event was Saturday, 28th June from 5–8pm, with a £10 entry that includes pizza, card packs, and soft drinks.

“It’s about building community, not profit,” Aaron added. “We want to create a space where people can share their passion and learn more about the hobby together.”

Looking ahead, Aaron hopes to offer services such as bulk PSA submission for grading, card valuation support, and purchasing graded cards from local collectors to help them get the most out of their collections.

“This is a self-funded project, started on a very small budget, but the interest has already been huge,” said Aaron. “We’re still humble and growing, but I really believe this could become one of Andover’s best shops. It’s a hobby lounge as much as a shop – somewhere to hang out, learn, and enjoy something special.”
