Off To A Good Start – Music At Heart

Attracting the Club’s highest attendance for eighteen months, MUSIC at HeART (sponsored by WEOS) enjoyed a successful debut at its new venue on 18 April – for which thanks are due to the talented guest artiste TONY STACE as well as to the support and co-operation of the White Hart Hotel staff.

The evening began with a tune new to the Club – the Jockey Polka, composed by Josef Strauss (brother of the more famous Johann) – followed, in complete contrast, by a Disney selection including the Mickey Mouse March and It’s a Small World

A Matt Monro medley is always popular and Tony didn’t disappoint, performing such favourites as Portrait of My Love, Born Free and My Kind of Girl.

Moving forward to music of the 70s, examples included Can’t Give You Anything But My Love (The Stylistics), We Don’t Talk Anymore (Cliff Richard), and Nobody Does it Better (Carly Simon), whilst a selection of waltzes – naturally including the Blue Danube – brought closure to the first half.

Following the interval, Tony performed an Italian selection, including Volare and That’s Amore (both Dean Martin hits), before continuing with a medley from the ever-popular musical, ‘Phantom of the Opera’ – songs such as Think of Me, All I Ask of You and The Music of the Night.

Latin American tunes were next to feature – Bésame Mucho, Carioca and Toca Toca – evoking memories of the late German organist Klaus Wunderlich, before the pop music of Elton John came to the fore with such numbers as Song for Guy and Crocodile Rock, giving Tony the opportunity to don his specially selected sparkling spectacles!

Another polka – the Annen Polka (Johann Strauss Jr) – was chosen to conclude the concert, whilst a singalong medley provided an encore to complete a most entertaining evening

The Club’s next concert is on Thursday 16 May, at the White Hart Hotel in Andover, and further information can be found on the Club’s website, www.weyhill-eos.co.uk
