Hampshire Police have stepped up efforts to tackle rural crime, conducting proactive operations to target offenders who exploit isolated areas under the cover of darkness.

Most recently, an overnight operation took place on Thursday 27 February, focusing on rural crime hotspots across Test Valley, Rural Basingstoke and Hart, and East Hampshire.
The operation saw the Country Watch team joined by officers from Yateley, Tadley, Basingstoke’s Neighbourhood Enforcement Team, Aldershot’s Priority Crime Team, Surrey Police, Winchester’s District Policing Team, firearms officers, and the dog unit. The teams worked together to patrol major roads and back country lanes, focusing on areas known to be targeted by criminals.
Rural Crime Prevention
The police operation aimed to disrupt offenders involved in crimes such as burglary, hare coursing, and poaching—offences that often impact farmers, landowners, and rural communities.
Several vehicles and individuals were stopped and searched during the night, but no offences were identified. Officers believe the highly visible police presence played a role in deterring criminal activity during the operation.
Inspector’s Statement
Inspector Cath MacDonald said:
“We’re starting to see a steady decline in reports of offences such as poaching and hare coursing, however, we will not be complacent as we know these criminals are still active in Hampshire and over the county borders.
“These offenders relentlessly target and intimidate innocent people who live and work in rural areas, and these crimes can seriously impact their livelihoods.
“The Country Watch team uses intelligence to track and monitor crimes, mapping hotspot areas so we can target patrols and operations. As the seasons change, we will continuously carry out proactive operations throughout the year to stop criminals in their tracks and prevent offences occurring in the first place.”
