Police Launch 24-Hour BSL Interpretation Service for Deaf Community

Members of the deaf and hearing-impaired community across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight can now contact the police for non-emergency matters using a British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter, following the launch of a new SignVideo service.

The service, which operates 24 hours a day, connects BSL users to a qualified interpreter via a secure video link. The interpreter then facilitates the conversation between the caller and staff in the police control room. The system is completely free to use and can be accessed through the SignVideo app or website.

Chief Superintendent Simon Dodds said:

“This service ensures that British Sign Language users can reach us when they need to; whether they’re reporting a crime, which isn’t an emergency, or contacting their local neighbourhood officer. We’re committed to enhancing our service so that BSL users not only have the ability, but also the confidence, to contact us whenever they need our help.”

To use the interpretation service, members of the public can download the SignVideo app on their phone or tablet, or access it online by visiting www.signvideo.co.uk.

Once connected, users can contact the police for free by selecting Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary in the Sign Directory.

The introduction of SignVideo marks an important step towards improving accessibility and ensuring that everyone in the community can communicate with the police quickly and confidently when they need assistance.
