Running for Lacey: Local Mum Takes on London Marathon in Emotional Tribute

On Sunday 26th April 2026, local runner Natalie Wade will take on the iconic London Marathon, marking her first ever marathon and the biggest running challenge of her life.

For Natalie, this is far more than a bucket list achievement. She will be running in memory of Lacey Pearl Leggett, a little girl whose life, though heartbreakingly short, left a lasting impact on everyone who knew her.

Natalie’s daughter, Ava, is in the same class as Lacey’s brother, Stanley, creating a close and personal connection to the Leggett family. It is this bond that has made the 26.2-mile challenge especially meaningful.

Lacey was diagnosed with mitochondrial depletion disease within her TK2 gene, a rare condition that weakens the muscles and can eventually lead to organ failure. She passed away on 14th February 2014 at just two years old. Although Lacey could never walk, eat or talk, she communicated in her own unique way — through laughter, nods, gestures and her much-loved “body dance”. Her vibrant spirit, kindness and joy touched all who met her.

In her memory, Natalie is raising funds for The Lily Foundation, a charity that supports families affected by mitochondrial disease while funding vital research into potential treatments and cures.

Every other day in the UK, a baby is born who may develop serious mitochondrial disease, yet currently there is no cure,” Natalie said.

Her fundraising journey has already brought the community together. Last year, Natalie organised a raffle in partnership with local businesses, raising just over £1,000 for the cause.

“I’m so grateful to the businesses who donated prizes and to everyone who bought tickets, it exceeded all my expectations,” she said.

Training for a marathon has proven to be no small task. With months of preparation and relentless winter weather, Natalie admits the journey has been tough.

“Nothing can truly prepare you for training for a marathon — it’s intense, and the endless wet weather hasn’t made it any easier,” she said.

As race day approaches, her training schedule has intensified, with longer and tougher runs each week, whatever the conditions.

“The miles are getting longer, and tougher, every week,” Natalie explained. “So if you see me out running, please give me a wave as every bit of support helps.”

With determination and community spirit behind her, Natalie hopes not only to complete her first marathon but also to honour Lacey’s memory in a way that reflects the joy she brought to others. Through her efforts, she aims to inspire those around her and help The Lily Foundation continue its crucial work supporting families like the Leggetts while driving forward research into mitochondrial disease.
