Sainsbury’s has issued an urgent recall of two of its houmous products over concerns they may contain Shiga toxin-producing E.coli (STEC), a bacteria that can cause serious illness.

The affected products are:
- JS Classic Houmous (315g) – Batch code 8001352, Use by 13 September 2025
- JS Lemon & Coriander Houmous (200g) – Batch code 8062998, Use by 14 September 2025
Shiga toxin-producing E.coli can cause symptoms including diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and bloody diarrhoea. In severe cases, it can lead to haemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a serious condition that can cause kidney failure and may be fatal.
Sainsbury’s says the recall is a precautionary step, and point-of-sale notices will be displayed in all stores that have stocked the products.
Advice to Customers
- Do not eat the products.
- Return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund.
- No receipt is required.

Sainsbury’s apologised for any inconvenience caused, stressing that the recall only affects these two products and no other houmous lines.
