‘Story Garden’ Summer Reading Challenge returns to Hampshire Libraries

Hampshire libraries are set to inspire young readers with this year’s nature-themed Summer Reading Challenge, launching Saturday 12 July.

Young Girl Ready Books in Garden

Young book lovers across Hampshire are invited to join the 2025 Summer Reading Challenge, launching in local libraries on Saturday 12 July. This year’s theme, Story Garden, combines the joys of reading with the wonders of nature, encouraging children to dive into books and explore storytelling through garden-inspired adventures.

The challenge, aimed at children aged 4 to 11, is part of a national initiative by The Reading Agency and runs in Hampshire until Saturday 13 September. Children are encouraged to read six books over the summer, collecting stickers along the way and earning a certificate and a sustainable wooden medal when they complete the challenge.

Councillor Steve Forster, Hampshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, said the programme plays a vital role in keeping young minds active during the break:

“Establishing an early love of reading has so many clear and wide-ranging benefits… I encourage as many children as possible to take part and to get out and about in our fantastic libraries this summer.”

All Hampshire library members—whether they live, work or study in the county – can take part for free.

In addition to books, participating libraries will host themed events and activities throughout the summer, including:

Junk Jodie: Bee…Insect-AZING!

Aimed at children aged 3 to 9, this interactive session features singalongs, dancing and recycled craft-making with characters like Bobby Bee and Betsy Butterfly. It’s a playful way to learn about gardens and insects while getting hands-on with eco-friendly fun.

Steppin’ Up: Story Garden

These imaginative dance sessions for children aged 4 to 11 combine storytelling with hip hop, street, and commercial dance. Kids will explore enchanted forests through movement and work together to create their own narrative journey. Run by Fareham-based dance company Steppin’ Up, the sessions promote body confidence and creativity.

Both events are part of Hampshire’s Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme and are prioritised for children receiving free school meals. Dates and locations vary – details and booking are available on the Hampshire Libraries Events page.
