The Dog Who Changed Everything: How Riley Inspired an Award-Winning Business

A Hampshire-based dog trainer is gaining recognition across the industry after picking up a series of prestigious awards, with his business, Rileys Canine Coaching, continuing to grow in both reputation and impact.

Founded in 2021 by Nick Shelley, the business was inspired by a dog who, in his own words, “changed everything”.

“Riley was the dog who changed it all – the dog who changed my life,” Nick said. “From working in the zoo industry to chasing a career with dogs, it all comes back to him.”

Before entering the world of dog training, Nick worked with exotic animals at a zoo in Berkshire, focusing on species such as raccoons, otters and lemurs. However, meeting Riley shifted his path entirely.

“From day one, his loving manner and goofy smile had me hooked,” he said. “Over the years, we developed a bond formed over a shared love of food and long walks. They say no matter how many years you have with a dog, it’s never enough – and that’s never been more true than with Riley.”

That bond ultimately led to the creation of Rileys Canine Coaching, built on the belief that every dog is unique and deserves an individualised approach.

“Not all pets are born equal. They each have their own traits and mannerisms, and therefore require their own specialised training,” Nick explained. “That’s where we come in.”

The business offers one-to-one training tailored to each dog, covering everything from basic manners to more complex behavioural issues. A key part of the approach is empowering owners as well as their pets.

“Our trainers are focused on not only training your dog, but teaching you how to effectively communicate with them,” he said. “It’s about building a happier life together.”

Nick’s methods are rooted in force-free, reward-based training, something he believes is essential in an unregulated industry.

“The dog training and behaviour industry is completely unregulated, meaning anyone can claim to be a trainer,” he said. “I take pride in having the experience, qualifications and knowledge to help dogs without resorting to fear, pain, submission or intimidation.”

His qualifications include being an IMDT Accredited Trainer, a Level Five Canine Behaviour Practitioner, and holding an Advanced Diploma in Canine Behaviour from the British College of Canine Studies. He also continues to undertake further training to ensure his skills remain up to date.

That dedication has not gone unnoticed. Nick has recently been named Dog Training Company of the Year at the Prestige Awards, Best Dog Trainer in Basingstoke & Deane at the Quality Business Awards, and received a Highly Commended recognition at the UK Small Business Awards 2025. He was also a finalist for Animal Trainer of the Year 2026 at the Animal Star Awards.

“It was a real honour to receive this recognition,” he said. “It reinforces that the business is moving in the right direction and gives clients confidence in what I do. It also motivates me to keep improving.”

Among the many dogs Nick has worked with, one transformation stands out. He recalls helping a family who had adopted a street dog from Romania, who was initially too frightened to engage with anyone.

“When I first met him, he was standing on the kitchen table, refusing to let anyone near him. He was scared and confused,” Nick said. “With a patient, gentle, reward-based approach, we were able to build trust and clear communication. Now, he’s an absolute star and the family adore him.”

Looking ahead, Nick is focused on building on his success while staying true to the values that inspired the business.

“I’m really pleased to have reached this milestone,” he said. “My focus now is on continuing to improve what I offer, investing in the business, and maintaining the standards that led to this recognition.”

With a strong foundation, a growing list of accolades, and a deeply personal story at its heart, Rileys Canine Coaching is continuing to make a meaningful difference to dogs and their owners alike.
