A group of Andover Brownies enjoyed a three-night residential trip during October half term, made possible in part by a £1,000 grant from Andover Millway ward councillors.

The 9th Andover Brownies, who meet weekly at St Thomas’s Church in Charlton and Pentons, headed to Thirtover Place in Berkshire over half term. The trip gave 22 members of the unit the chance to spend time away from home in a safe, fun and supportive environment.
The group had already confirmed their attendees before applying for the grant, but with the cost of living continuing to affect families across Test Valley, the funding helped to significantly reduce the cost for everyone taking part. It also meant that the group could offer a unique animal handling experience while away – something they wouldn’t otherwise have been able to afford.
This support reflects the councillors’ understanding of the vital role that community groups like Girlguiding play in helping young people grow in confidence, independence, and leadership. Residential events like this are a key part of that journey, and the Brownies are committed to making sure no one is left out.

Kel Ryder, unit leader and organiser, said; “We’re proud to be the largest Brownie unit in Andover, with up to 50 members at any one time. This trip was a fantastic learning experience, and we’re so pleased to have been able to reduce the cost for every participant. Thanks to the councillors’ support, we were also able to offer a special animal handling activity which made the experience even more memorable.”
Councillor Jim Neal, who endorsed the grant, added; “We’re really pleased to support the Brownies and the volunteers who make these opportunities possible. Clubs like this are the heart of our community; they bring people together, build confidence and make sure no child is left behind.”
The trip saw 22 Brownies and three Young Leaders take part, offering a unique mix of experiences and peer support. The group stayed in a residential house run by Girlguiding Royal Berkshire, which provides a safe and inclusive space for young people to learn and grow.
