A34 Closed for Hours After Caravan Crash Near Whitchurch

Motorists faced lengthy delays on the A34 after a car towing a caravan overturned, forcing part of the busy road to close for several hours.

The incident happened on the southbound carriageway between Whitchurch and Bullington Cross shortly after midday on Wednesday, 24 June.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 12.25pm following reports of a single-vehicle collision. Despite the dramatic nature of the crash, no injuries were reported.

Hampshire Constabulary confirmed that the vehicle involved was towing a caravan when the collision occurred.

A spokesperson for the force said the incident was reported at 12.25pm and added that no one was hurt.

Firefighters from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service also attended, working to ensure the scene was safe before leaving just after 1.15pm.

A spokesperson for the fire service said crews responded to reports of a road traffic collision on the A34 southbound between Whitchurch and Bullington Cross. Firefighters made the vehicles safe before handing the scene over for recovery.

The crash led to significant disruption for drivers throughout the afternoon as recovery teams removed the overturned vehicle and caravan, while debris and a spillage were cleared from the carriageway.

National Highways warned motorists to expect long queues, with Lane 1 remaining closed while recovery operations continued. At its worst, congestion stretched for around 10 miles, with journey times increasing by up to 80 minutes.

Drivers were advised to allow extra time for their journeys and consider alternative routes while the incident was dealt with.
