Young judo star Albie Jahovic, from The Judo Company in Stockbridge, has returned from one of Europe’s most prestigious international competitions with an outstanding silver medal after an exceptional performance at the 51st International Judo Tournament Venray in the Netherlands.

Competing on 20th June against some of Europe’s finest young judoka, Albie battled his way through a fiercely competitive field of 21 competitors to secure second place at an event which regularly attracts more than 1,600 athletes from over 30 countries.
Widely regarded as one of the continent’s premier junior judo tournaments, Venray provides a significant test for aspiring young athletes, and Albie rose to the challenge with remarkable confidence and determination.
His journey to the final featured five demanding contests against experienced Dutch and Belgian opponents. Demonstrating impressive technical ability and composure, Albie won the majority of his matches by ippon – judo’s highest scoring technique and the equivalent of a knockout victory.
His dominant performances earned praise from coaches and spectators alike as he consistently overcame high-quality international opposition to reach the gold medal contest.
In the final, Albie faced a talented German competitor in a closely fought contest. With neither athlete able to break the deadlock during normal time, the match entered golden score, where the first successful technique would decide the winner. After an intense and evenly matched battle, Albie was narrowly defeated by a single yuko, earning a well-deserved silver medal.
Although missing out on gold by the finest of margins, Albie’s display further cemented his growing reputation as one of Britain’s most promising young judoka.

Throughout the tournament, Albie was coached by his father, Jack Jahovic, whose experience and guidance proved invaluable during a challenging day of elite international competition. Working closely together, the father-and-son team adapted tactics throughout the event and maintained focus as Albie progressed through each round.
Reaching the final of a tournament with the stature and history of Venray is a significant achievement in itself, highlighting not only Albie’s dedication and work ethic but also his ability to compete successfully against some of Europe’s best young talent.
Looking ahead, Albie has his sights firmly set on one day representing Great Britain at the Olympic Games. He has expressed his sincere gratitude to former Olympic judoka Ashley McKenzie and Ryan Saunders of Deprag, whose generous sponsorship and support made the trip to the Netherlands possible and continue to play a vital role in his development.
As Albie continues his journey towards international success, he is seeking additional sponsors to help fund future training, travel and competition costs. Businesses or individuals interested in supporting one of the country’s brightest young judo prospects are encouraged to contact The Judo Company in Stockbridge to find out more about becoming part of Albie’s Olympic journey.
