Andover Residents to Benefit from More Personalised NHS Cervical Screening Programme

Women and people with a cervix in Andover will soon benefit from changes to the NHS cervical screening programme, which aims to make the service more personalised and convenient.

From July, those aged 25 to 49 who test negative for high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) will be invited for cervical screening every five years instead of every three. This decision is based on strong clinical evidence showing that people who test negative for HPV are at very low risk of developing cervical cancer over the following decade.

Those who test positive for HPV, or have a recent history of it, will still be invited for more frequent screening to monitor for any changes that could lead to cervical cancer.

The change, recommended by the UK National Screening Committee, brings England in line with Scotland and Wales. Women aged 50 to 64 are already on five-year screening intervals.

Locally, GP practices and health centres in Andover will continue to offer cervical screening appointments, with the NHS now using a new digital reminder system. Eligible individuals will receive notifications via the NHS App prompting them to book an appointment. If the notification isn’t opened, a text message will follow. Letters will continue to be sent to those who need or prefer them.

Dr Sue Mann, NHS National Clinical Director for Women’s Health, said:

“Taking a more personalised approach to cervical screening will help ensure everyone eligible can make the most of these life-saving services, while sparing women appointments they don’t need.”

Since 2019, all cervical screening samples in England, including those from Andover clinics, have been tested for high-risk HPV. This test is more accurate than the previous method and helps determine how often someone needs to be screened.

Local health leaders are urging residents not to ignore their invitation.

Michelle Mitchell, Chief Executive of Cancer Research UK, added:

“Screening, alongside the HPV vaccine, has already helped cut cervical cancer rates. This change is based on years of research and will make screening more effective.”

Women who attend a screening on or after 1 July 2025 and meet the clinical criteria will be placed on the new five-year schedule. Those with HPV in their sample will continue to be monitored more closely.

If you live in Andover and believe you are due for cervical screening but have not received an invitation, please contact your GP surgery to check your eligibility.
