Even though today is a school day , local school children in Andover still took time out of their school day to remember.
Remembrance Day was first observed in 1919 throughout the British Commonwealth. It was originally called “Armistice Day” to commemorate armistice agreement that ended the First World War on Monday, November 11, 1918, at 11 a.m.—on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.
Endeavour School pupils read out remembrance poems in the Augusta Park Community Memorial Garden and laid down 2 poppy wreaths.
Winton Community Academy pupils have been working on a Remembrance Tree. They have chosen to “light up” one of their trees with work from both the Art Club and History Club. In addition to this, students have been reflecting on the importance of Remembrance in both their History lessons and in English. Their Remembrance Assembly focused on the issue of Diversity as we remember that all groups in our community have made sacrifices for us in past conflicts. On Sunday, staff and students of Winton will form part of the Andover Town Remembrance Parade and join others in laying a wreath at the War Memorial.
Year 10 student Robert Sawyer at John Hanson School stood up in front of the whole school and played The Last Post on his tenor horn which lead into to the one minute silence. John Hanson staff said, “Our students were so very respectful.”
