Applications Now Open for 30 Hours of Funded Childcare – Families in Andover Encouraged to Apply

Working parents in Andover are being urged to check if they’re eligible for the latest expansion of the government’s funded childcare offer, as applications open for the 30 hours entitlement starting in September 2025.

From Monday 12 May, families with children who will be 9 months old by 1 September can apply for up to 30 hours of funded childcare per week, potentially saving up to £7,500 per child each year. For households with school-aged children also benefiting from free breakfast clubs and uniform support, the annual savings could reach £8,000.

The extended entitlement follows the successful rollout of the 15-hour funded childcare scheme last year. According to the Department for Education, nearly 500,000 children are already benefiting from the support nationally, and new figures show that more parents are increasing their working hours as a result.

Locally, this could provide a welcome boost to families in Andover and the wider Test Valley area, where access to flexible, affordable childcare has long been a barrier for many working parents.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said:

“Early years is my number one priority, and making sure families are able to benefit from this rollout is a promise made, and promise kept. But this is just the beginning.”

The government has pledged £2 billion in additional investment to help nurseries and childminders meet the increased demand. It is also consulting on how to give providers more flexibility in using outdoor space—potentially great news for Andover settings with garden or play areas.

Outdoor Play Focus

Alongside the funding announcement, a new consultation has been launched to explore how nurseries can better integrate outdoor learning into their provision. With many Andover early years providers already championing nature-based play, any changes to formal guidelines could make it easier to accommodate more children without sacrificing quality.

How to Apply

Eligible parents should apply through the Childcare Choices website, where more details on eligibility and how to secure a place are available. Applications for the September term are now open.

For parents in Andover looking for additional guidance, local support services or childcare providers may also be able to offer help in navigating the process.
