Poundland has confirmed that its Andover store will close next month, bringing an end to more than 16 years of trading in the town centre.

The retailer has announced that its branch at 11–15 High Street, Andover, SP10 1LJ, will close permanently on 29 July 2026 after being unable to secure new lease terms with the landlord.

A spokesperson for Poundland said: “Yes, sadly we intend to close our store in Andover at 11–15 High Street, SP10 1LJ on 29 July 2026. I’m afraid we’ve been unable to secure new lease terms that would allow us to stay open.

“We know how disappointing this will be to customers and colleagues alike and we will obviously consult with colleagues and that work is underway.”

Poundland officially opened its Andover branch on 5 February 2010, taking over the former Woolworths site following the collapse of the iconic retailer. Since then, the store has become a familiar fixture in the town centre and a regular destination for bargain hunters.

In October last year, the future of the store was thrown into doubt as part of Poundland’s wider restructuring plans. The branch began a clearance sale, sparking concerns that it would be among a number of closures across the country.

However, in a dramatic reprieve, Poundland later confirmed it had reached a new agreement with the landlord that would allow the store to remain open. Andover Radio and Love Andover were first to bring residents news that the closure could be avoided.

At the time, the decision was welcomed by staff and shoppers alike, particularly as it safeguarded the jobs of the store’s 15 employees.

Speaking last year, Poundland’s UK Retail Manager Darren MacDonald said: “We’re pleased to have come to an agreement to keep our Andover store open, joining three other stores that have seen their closures reversed in recent weeks.

“We will continue to seek accommodations with landlords to keep stores trading.”

Sadly, those efforts have now proved unsuccessful in Andover, with the retailer unable to reach fresh terms that would allow the branch to continue operating beyond July.

The company has confirmed that a consultation process with affected colleagues is already underway.

The closure will leave another vacant unit on Andover High Street and is likely to be met with disappointment from many residents who have supported the store since it opened more than 16 years ago.

Poundland has not yet confirmed whether any closing-down sale will take place ahead of the store’s final day of trading on 29 July.
