County Council asks Is Your Heart Older Than You?

A simple three minute test to help people find out whether their heart age is older than their real age is being backed by Hampshire County Council in a bid to raise awareness of heart health.

The test will also provide tips on how to lower heart age as well as ways to reduce risk factors for heart disease and stroke.

Councillor Patricia Stallard, Executive Member for Public Health at Hampshire County Council, said, “We know that an individual’s future chances of having a heart attack, stroke or developing certain types of dementia are affected significantly by certain lifestyle choices so the test is a great opportunity to assess your heart age and make improvements for your long-term heart health.

Local pharmacies are also getting behind the Heart Age campaign by providing free blood pressure tests. Knowing blood pressure is important as it is one of the many factors that affect heart age. One in four adults in the UK has high blood pressure, which is the leading cause of heart attacks and strokes and, as most people have no symptoms, it is important to get tested and take preventative action by making healthier choices if needed.

The test can be found online by searching Heart Age Test and is accompanied by tips on how to reduce risk factors, including improving diet and lowering cholesterol to reduce your heart age. In Hampshire in 2016 almost one quarter of the deaths (over 1,250) were due to diseases of the circulatory system. Poor diet, smoking, being overweight or obese, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol consumption and high blood pressure are the biggest contributors to premature death or ill health.
