Where the Ash Trees Grow

Step into a unique community art project celebrating the heritage, creativity and people of Andover.

Led by artist and storyteller Amanda Kane-Smith, Where the Ash Trees Grow is inspired by the origins of Andover’s name, believed to mean ‘Ash Tree Stream’. Throughout August, the former O2 shop in the Chantry Centre will be transformed into a growing installation of handmade ash trees and a flowing chalk stream – created by the community, for the community.

Visitors of all ages are invited to drop in and help build the artwork by creating ash trees and adding their own thoughts, hopes and wishes on leaves and ripples, allowing the installation to grow and evolve throughout the month.

The project also features a packed programme of free activities, including storytelling and craft sessions with Amanda Kane-Smith every Friday as part of Four Fun Fridays, photography workshops for teenagers led by Simon Peter Green, and sessions hosted by Andover Museum, Andover Trees United and Andover Library.

Designed to celebrate Andover’s identity, history and the many voices that make up its community, the project offers free, accessible creative opportunities for people of all ages.
