Hosepipe Ban Coming into Force in Andover from Monday

From 9am on Monday 21 July, hosepipe restrictions will be in place across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, including here in Andover. The ban is being introduced due to the ongoing dry weather and low water levels. Residents are being asked not to contact customer services directly, but instead to visit the water company’s website for full details.

The Environment Agency has officially declared the Solent and South Downs region, which includes Andover, to be in a state of “prolonged dry weather.” With river levels falling and water supplies under pressure, the aim of the ban is to help conserve resources and protect our precious chalk streams.

The ban applies to the use of hosepipes for activities such as watering gardens, washing vehicles, or filling paddling pools. However, there are important exemptions. Those on the Priority Services Register—including Blue Badge holders, people with mobility needs, and households on the WaterSure tariff—may still use a hosepipe if necessary.

Additional allowances also apply:

  • Newly laid turf may be watered for 28 days.
  • Hosepipes may be used for cleaning animals or animal areas, such as stables.
  • Watering of vegetable patches or allotments is still permitted, though using a watering can is encouraged where possible.
  • Essential water use, including for drinking, cooking, and washing, remains unaffected.

Southern Water has asked the public not to contact customer services directly, but to visit their website for full details and updates. They are also encouraging residents to report any misuse of water via their dedicated online reporting tool.

The message is clear: every drop counts. Simple changes like switching to a watering can or skipping a car wash can make a significant difference.
