How to Protect Your Pets During the Hot Weather

As temperatures continue to rise across the region this Bank Holiday weekend, pet owners are being urged to take extra precautions to keep their animals safe and comfortable in the hot weather.

With wall-to-wall sunshine and hot conditions expected through to the middle of next week, vets and animal welfare organisations are reminding owners that pets can quickly become unwell in extreme heat.

Dogs, cats, rabbits and other small animals can all struggle during periods of prolonged sunshine and high temperatures, with heatstroke posing a serious risk if animals become too hot.

Experts are advising dog owners to avoid walking pets during the hottest parts of the day, particularly between 11am and 3pm, when pavements can become dangerously hot for paws. Instead, walks should take place early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are cooler.

Owners are also being encouraged to ensure pets always have access to fresh drinking water and shaded areas where they can cool down.

Leaving pets in cars during warm weather is strongly discouraged, as temperatures inside vehicles can rise rapidly within minutes, even if windows are left open.

Animal charities have also shared advice for smaller pets, including rabbits and guinea pigs, whose hutches should be moved out of direct sunlight and kept well ventilated throughout the day.

Tips to keep pets safe in hot weather

  • Always provide plenty of fresh, cool water
  • Walk dogs early morning or late evening
  • Avoid hot pavements that can burn paws
  • Never leave pets in parked cars
  • Keep pets in shaded or cool indoor areas
  • Use cooling mats or damp towels to help pets stay comfortable
  • Watch for signs of heatstroke, including excessive panting, lethargy or drooling
  • Make sure smaller animals have good airflow and shelter from direct sunlight

Veterinary professionals say owners should contact a vet immediately if they suspect their pet is suffering from heatstroke.

With the sunny spell expected to continue for several days, pet owners are being reminded that a few simple precautions can help ensure animals stay happy, healthy and safe during the warm weather.
