Light of Asia, one of the town’s most beloved independent restaurants, is celebrating after receiving a coveted Good Food Award — a recognition that highlights both its culinary excellence and its deep-rooted connection to the community.

Abu, one of the owners, described the award as “a huge honour for us. As a local, family-run restaurant, it represents recognition not just of our food, but of the passion and dedication our team puts in every single day. For us, it’s proof that an independent restaurant can stand shoulder to shoulder with bigger names, while still staying true to its roots and community.”
When asked what sets Light of Asia apart, Abu said, “We believe it’s our balance of tradition and innovation. Our menu celebrates authentic recipes passed down through generations, but we also adapt them with fresh ideas to suit modern tastes. Beyond the food, we pride ourselves on genuine hospitality — every guest is welcomed like family, and that warmth is something people remember long after their meal.”
The Good Food Award is determined by customer votes rather than judges, with diners sharing why they felt the restaurant deserved recognition. Abu explained, “There wasn’t a specific dish to choose from, customers simply visited the Good Food website, cast a vote for their favourite restaurant, and shared the reason behind their choice.”
Community support has been central to Light of Asia’s success. “The local community has been the backbone of our success. From day one, they’ve supported us, recommended us to friends, and celebrated milestones with us,” Abu said. “To our regular customers, we simply want to say thank you. Your loyalty and encouragement inspire us to keep raising the bar. This award belongs as much to you as it does to us.”
Founded in 1976, Light of Asia began with a simple vision: to bring authentic South Asian flavours to the town in a welcoming, family-friendly setting. Abu reflected, “Over the years, we’ve grown, but our heart has remained the same — a place where food, culture, and community come together.”
Next year, Light of Asia will celebrate its 50th anniversary, a remarkable milestone that few independent restaurants achieve. Half a century of serving the community is no small feat, and this Good Food Award adds a sparkling new chapter to a legacy built on passion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to quality and hospitality. For generations of locals, Light of Asia has been more than just a restaurant — it’s been a place to share meals, celebrate milestones, and feel part of a welcoming family.
With the Good Food Award in hand and 50 years on the horizon, Light of Asia continues to shine as a jewel of the community, proving that excellence, warmth, and tradition never go out of style.
